Homework is given on Monday and is be returned on Friday. Each week, your child will be asked to read for 10-15 minutes Monday through Thursday. This is the most important part of the homework. You may choose to read to your child, have your child read to you, or have your child read to a sibling, stuffed animal, dog, etc. Listening to you read will be a great model of the fluency we are working on building.
Fluency is "reading like you talk" with proper expression, speed, and accuracy. When your child reads, he or she is practicing fluency. Don't be surprised if he or she asks to read the same book again and again. It's ok.....this will build fluency as well.
There will usually be another sheet stapled to the reading log that includes an activity or practice page that relates to what we are learning about in class. Sometimes it is a project that we will be sharing on Friday. Often times, there will be a writing portion. Please have your child do the writing. Your child may spell words incorrectly, but that is ok. First graders write phonetically: they write what they hear. Encourage your child to use capitals, periods, and spaces correctly in his or her writing homework.
Homework Folder
Your child will take home and return a homework folder EVERY DAY.Please check it EVERY DAY for homework, notes, and graded papers. Please sign and return the forms that are sent home the first week of school (lunch, emergency contact info, handbook page) as soon as possible. On the front of your child's homework folder, you will find a calendar for the month. Please DO NOT remove this calendar from the folder. We will use it for the whole month. Each day your child will record his or her behavior color for that day (see classroom management tab).If your child received a color other than green for the day, I will record a quick note on what happened. Please talk to your child every day about the choices he or she made for the day, both positive and negative. Please initial the small box each day.
